If you haven't heard yet there is a new agency in town called The New Black (New BLK). The New Black is a "creative shop and an idea shop" according to Eric Gautschi, creative director and one of five owners. The rest of the team comprises of brothers Shane and Shawn Bainbridge, Matt Linder and Jon Hustead who all used to be a team at another Omaha-based ad agency and decided to go out on their own.
The new agency works as a creative consultant to help other agencies and clients needing additional “creative firepower.” They’re still working with their former employer, as well as a number of other agencies in town. Clients include Havana Garage and the Lancaster County Agency on Teen Gambling Education, among others.
All five own a stake in the business, and they say any new employees will have a stake, too. This partnership model reminds me of the book "Open Minds" by And Law were the agency St Luke's is owned entirely by its employees, all physical resources are shared, there is little hierarchy and all employees are involved in almost all decisions. The New Black recently updated their website showing off a mix of past work siting the agency and other participants that worked with them The New Black creatives and some original New Black work like the redesign of the S.G. Roi identity (aka the Tobacconist in the downtown Old Market). Using cigar label art with all of their detail and embellishments as inspiration they design team created a simple band with detailing to bring a fresh feel to the vintage business.
